Discussing with patients about joining a stroke trial
“Informing patients about the concept and goal of a clinical trial is of the utmost importance. Taking time to explain the underlying condition, treatment options as well as the follow-up schedule in a clinical trial will enable patients to fully understand what to expect. In secondary prevention or rehabilitation trials I advise patients to talk to family members and/or friends before making a decision especially if study visits require the support of others. Giving patients time to consider participation in a trial will allow for these conversations to take place between patients and caregivers. Concerns and questions raised, can be answered by the investigators before randomization resulting in a well-informed participant with trust in the team.”
